Our recent visit to Taylor Grocery and Restaurant was a delightful experience, marked by great food and even better service.

We started with the grilled bacon-wrapped pork chop, which was seasoned beautifully. While it was slightly overcooked for my taste, it was still very enjoyable—nothing was left on the plate! The ribeye, however, was a true highlight—seasoned to perfection and cooked to a flawless medium rare. It was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor.

To end the meal, we indulged in a slice of pecan pie with a scoop of ice cream, which was simply delightful. The pie had the perfect balance of sweetness, and the ice cream added a creamy contrast that made the dessert unforgettable.

The restaurant is BYOB, but there’s a bit of a twist. We were initially confused about the BYOB policy due to some conflicting information posted on Facebook. When we arrived, we were informed that you need to bring your beverages in a brown paper bag—no ice chests allowed. Fortunately, Lynn was there to clear up our confusion. He went above and beyond in terms of customer service, making sure we understood the policy and felt comfortable.

Our server, Megan, was exceptional. She was incredibly attentive, always had a smile on her face, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal.

Overall, Taylor Grocery and Restaurant offers a warm atmosphere, delicious food, and outstanding service. Just be sure to bring your beverages in a brown paper bag, and you’ll be set for a wonderful dining experience!

I had a very good experience. I had the catfish, and it was AMAZING, I am from Chile, and I have eaten a lot of kind of preparation with fishes but none as delicious and taste as this. The dessert is also delicious.
The waitresses were very kind and nice.
It's really a place that I am going to miss, since I am not from this area.

First time there, such a neat building & the food was good. This place is known for the catfish, which I do not eat, so I tried the dozen shrimp, half fried & half grilled. They were delicious. Live music was nice, we enjoyed it.

Just awful! We were in Oxford for a softball tournament! We were so excited to try some of the local food! We called ahead but when we arrived, we were met with nothing but nasty and horrific attitudes. When our coach addressed the young man who was basically pushing us out the door, he was extremely rude and slammed the door in our faces with a smirk on his face all while telling us to go somewhere else! He also told us that NO-ONE in town would serve a party of 20! How sad is that?!?’ All of this was done in front of our entire softball team! I would give them zero stars if I could! That’s how awful they were to us! BTW, we went to Land Shark and it was amazing! Great food and great atmosphere! Don’t waste your time at Taylor Grocery!

Came here with my in laws on a Saturday evening. Just a heads up, this place gets really busy! Go early, or expect a wait. They do not take reservations, nor will they seat you if your whole party is not present.

We got there a little past 6 PM and was told the wait time is an hour. We actually only waited 20 minutes. Our server was great! Good Ole southern hospitality where they still call you, "sweetie and baby."

I ordered the grilled chicken. It was juicy and tender. Did it wow me? No. But the service and the quick food delivery made up for it. The food wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't make an effort to go out of my way to come back.

Bummer service. Our waiter was clearly annoyed with our kids and even grumpily said something about their behavior-and if you’ve ever been around a 3 & 5 yr old, they were being quite mild. At the end, they added a $20 split plate charge because we ordered 4 entrees (for the 4 adults) but gave a few bites to our kids. We didn’t even ask for extra silverware or plates. Then we asked the staff about the charge and two waitresses were laughing at us. They also gave us the check before we were done eating (15 min into our meal). It was weird to feel disrespected at a restaurant-lol. But food was great! The red beans and rice were great, along with the fried catfish and pecan pie. Don’t order the side salad.

Lots of recent reviews also say the service was bad and families were treated with impatience.

We finally got over to Taylor Grocery for dinner. The day before our visit, I was chatting with an elderly lady who grew up in, and still lives in Taylor who advised me “if you want to eat on a Friday night, you better be on the bench at 4:30 or you won’t get in the door.” Well, we took her advice and arrived at 4:30 pm sharp – the bench was already full! But…they have a lot of tables and we were able to get in on the first wave. And yes, they do strictly enforce the requirement that your entire party must be present to get a table.
We were promptly waited on by Melissa who was a wonderful waitress, hostess, and a bit of a “trail guide” as we explored the menu. If you have never been to Taylor Grocery, my suggestion is to do what we did and that was to order a couple of appetizers, especially the sampler plate. This plate includes catfish fillets, boneless “wings”, hush puppies, and shrimp, all of which provides a sneak peak into what a person might want to order for dinner. The catfish was awesome! It was perfectly cooked and its light and tender texture resulted in two of us ordering a catfish entrée. The others at the table ordered the grilled double pork loin chops served over brown rice and smothered in gumbo.
ALL OF THE FOOD WAS TOP NOTCH AND EXACTLY WHAT I WAS EXPECTING AND WANTING from Taylor Grocery. There is clearly something’s going on back in the kitchen that makes the food so great. I’m not sure what it is but they, whoever it is that’s back there, needs to keep on doing whatever it is that they are doing that is so good. Green beans – absolutely delicious, just like my mom used to make. Turnip Greens – better than the green beans especially when doused with a bit of the “pepper vinegar” that is made in-house and comes to the table in an old tequila bottle. Gumbo – Terrific – nothing is spared in the gumbo, by itself, a bowl of this and a handful of the hushpuppies is about all a person might need. I’m pretty sure I could take a bath in a tub of that gumbo and enjoy every minute of it. The fried okra, almost a good as the catfish fillets!
My advice for folks who might be considering making the short drive from Oxford down to Taylor Grocery: Do as the Romans do. Get on the bench and get on it at least ½ hour before they open. Cash is welcome, credit cards are also accepted. No beer, wine or other alcohol, but they do serve soft drinks and tea in humongous sized glasses and to boot, refill them about every 74 seconds! I was not able to find the bottom of my glass no matter how hard I tried!

Dang, really sad about this visit. Had friends in town and were excited to go for the first time. Not a good experience whatsoever.

Short story: not “family friendly” at all. Waitress was very impatient with our kids, to a point it got awkward. We ordered full entrees for every adult, but got charged $20 splitting charge for trying to keep the kids behaved with a few fries and pieces of chicken. In general, everyone just seemed annoyed we were there, and we were doing our absolute best to keep the kids behaved.

More details: I went up to the manager and asked about the $20 split charge. And he did take off $10. But that wasn’t even my real issue - the split charge is on the menu, and I was willing to pay it (I had wrongly assumed it wasn’t a kid thing - more for couples who come in and order one meal). I was pretty subdued expressing my concern, and said multiple times I had no issue paying for the split charge if he decided it was appropriate. The bigger deal was, when I was up there, I expressed our disappointment with the service and how we were excited to come but didn’t feel very welcome. He didn’t apologize and didn’t try to talk about it in any way. I guess I’d hoped for a “I’m so sorry for this experience, we’d really love to have you come back, could you help me understand what went wrong?” But at the end of the day, the waitresses were laughing at my convo with the manager as we left, and I think they were fine with us never coming back.

Overall: If you’re a 50+ age couple on date night, I’m sure you’ll love it. The food was good (besides the side salad which you should not get)!
